Outside of birthdays, Christmas is my favorite holiday. I wait very impatiently for Thanksgiving to come and go (even though I love the food), so we can get in the holiday spirit with all things Christmas for at least 6 weeks. I grew up with 2 siblings and our family had some annual traditions that I’ve carried on as my own family grows. But I’ve also added some new traditions of my own. We’re having so much this year with all of the activities!
Christmas Tradition #1
Growing up, we always put the Christmas up the day after Thanksgiving. We had a huge 12 foot tree that was often too tall for the ceiling (military family…we moved a lot). We would carefully unwrap all of the ornaments, hanging them on the tree. Our mom would follow behind and tie deep red velvet bows to fill in the spaces. I’ve kept the tradition of decorating our tree, but I’ve started doing it the weekend before Thanksgiving. Jackson’s birthday usually falls the weekend after Thanksgiving, and I don’t want his birthday to be overshadowed by Thanksgiving and Christmas. So we decorate our tree the weekend before, celebrate Thanksgiving, and then celebrate Jackson’s birthday. And it also gives me the perfect excuse to have the tree up a week earlier 😉
Christmas Tradition #2
We open one present on Christmas Eve. For Jackson, it’s a pair of Christmas pajamas that he can wear to bed and then wake up to open presents.
Christmas Tradition #3
All the cookies. I love baking! Every year, I bake a variety of cookies, but one cookie always makes the list. Forgotten Cookies. Basically pure, delicious sugar. That’s the best kind of cookie, am I right? They’re not the easiest and take hours, but they only happen once a year! Even better, I am absolutely loving having Jackson join the fun and bake with me.
Christmas Tradition #4
Christmas lights. They’re so festive and so much fun! I’m not gonna lie though…we don’t have any on our house. But we do make it a point to drive around the neighborhoods to look at the lights or find a fun event, like at the zoo.
Christmas Tradition #5
Christmas ornaments. This wasn’t something I did growing up, but it’s one of my favorite traditions since having Jackson. Every year, we add one new ornament to the tree. His first year was a Baby’s First Christmas ornament that my sister made. Each following year, I take him to the store to choose out his own ornament that he gets to hang on the tree. He loves getting to look at all of the fun choices as he shops and these are always the ornaments he loves most each year. When the two little babes arrive, they’ll join in on the fun and get to choose their own ornaments too!
I loved getting to work with Ada from The Blooming Studio on this beautiful Christmas setup. I’m still obsessing over the bouquets and the perfectly simple table scape!
